took the old rear end out of the truck. went and picked up the new used one. junkyard guy tells me that they couldnt get the locking lugnuts off of each side of the axle, and if i want the tires they are mine. ok, cool, two new used spares.
problem is, i need to get the tires off of the axle so i can put new axle gaskets on it, and most importantly, to get the axle to fit under the truck. it isnt high enough on the jackstands to get the thing to just roll under the truck.
i need suggestions on how to cut, break, or somehow remove the lugnuts from the axle. i dont have access to a torch or anything like that right now, so i am kinda screwed if i cant find a way to do it without hand tools.
You can try driving a socket that is a real tight fit on, and hope that it holds. Sometimes works, but I wouldnt bet on it. Your other choice is to drill it out, and replace the stud. This is usually the way it ends up being. You could also grind down 2 flat spots on each side of the locking lug nut, assuming you have room to work, and get a big pair of vise grips and see if you can hammer it off that way. Good luck with it. Id recommend going with the drill method so you dont waste time trying the others.
I work at sears as a tire guy and Snap-on make a tool set to do just what your asking, it is a socket that digs into the locking lug a spins it out. If you don't want to spend the coin, I might suggest you go to a repair shop that does tire work. I know that sears charges 5 bucks a pop to remove 'em where Im at. It sure beats a torch though.
