Well this is the first time in the Ranger forum guy's, usually in the SD forum but I have a couple ?'s for the Ranger guy's here. I have a freind with a 97 4x4 Ranger with the 4 liter and a five speed(I think the off road package too). I am going to assist him in changing his transfer, trans, and rear diff fluids. I have read some good posts and found out how and what to use on the trans but the book doesn't tell me (at least I didn't see) what to use on the Transfer or the rear diff. In the rear diff on my SD I used 75W 140 syn. and a couple bottle's of friction modifier for the clutch packs (with LS). Is the ranger the same??? Should I just tell him to get the synthetic anyway even if he does'nt have a Limited Slip?? Also, what about the Transfer case, what type of fluid do they use on the Ranger????
Hey thanks for the reply's. The guy's going to be keeping the truck for a while so I think he will want to use the sythetic so I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't wreck anything. I didn't think it would but wasn't positive so thanks. For the transfer, sounds like I should just have him get the same Mercon V as is used for the trannie. Thanks for the help, keep the ranger's rollin guy's. My 99 v-10 is going strong with 125K on the ticker.
FWIW, although I doubt Mercon V will hurt anything, it does have different (and more) friction modifiers in it (it's a "slippier" fluid than regular Mercon) so it might be better for your buddy to stick with regular Mercon in the TC. If it's synthetic he's looking for in there, he might think about Mobil1 ATF.
P.S. I bet that V-10 has a little pull to it, huh?
