Tell me about them. I'm thinking of ordering the Mr. Gasket advance kit. The instructions talk about the Mallorey carb. Does it matter? Is the kit worth it?
Tmod is right. The springs are all that is availble for the Ford. If you use the lightest ones it will get your advance in by about 2500rpm. Check out this it should help.http://www.reincarnation-automotive....ons_index.html
You can accomplish pretty much the same thing by just using two of the light springs that come in the stock dist. Follow these instructions http://www.reincarnation-automotive....ons_index.html and just use a second light spring out of another dist or go order one. Leastwise that's what I've always done, never bought a kit. Owned a lot of different FE's over the years and even raced a few and all had dist mods.
Well, I see how to do it. I really don't feel comfortable messing with alot of things in there. I do feel comfortable just getting some lighter springs. I don't race, just want some quicker responce when I mash the gas. I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace the vacumn canister so that in itself would justify the Crane.
Having my advance in by 2500 rpm, how will affect my gas mileage? or will it? My normal driving, I putt putt around about 2000 rpm.
I just looked at Jeg's and found the Crane Advance, here's the part numbers:
270-99600-1 GM HEI, Includes Limiter Plate $22.99
270-99601-1 Delco Point Type, Includes Limiter Plate $22.99 270-99607-1 Ford V8 1973-85, with Electronic Ignition (without computer controls) $29.99
I'm thinking the last one. Right?

When I bought the Crane kit for my distributor I called Crane and asked what the difference between the electronic version and point version of the kit was and they didn't know so I purchased both kits and there is no difference between the kits.
I don't see the point kit called out in your post but I would recommend that kit as it is cheaper by a few bucks and everything is the same.

Anytime you shorten the advance curve or make it come in faster you will improve gas mileage unless you advance to much or to fast and get into pinging and such. You can control how soon (what rpm the max advance is reached) by bending the posts the springs mounts on. You don't even need to pull the dist apart. There is a window in the baseplate in the dist for access. More tension, slower advance; less tension the quicker the advance.

Got some bad news for ya, the access hole is very tiny. There is no way you can switch springs unless you dissabemble the dizzy. Disassebling the dizzy is easy, theres really nothing to it, JUST DO IT. I didnt know thing one about dizzys til I bought a Crane Recurve kit and installed it. Quite a difference in power, more response, the engine response much faster then before, and on the highway in high gear you really notice it, big difference.

I was taking about adjusting spring tension and changing the advance curve, not changing the springs. And you can't give me any news about Ford distributors, I've been working on them since 1962 and the advance mechanism has changed one bit.
I called NAPA and they don't carry them for Fords. Bummer.
Well, they sure as hell use to cause my '68 390 truck motor has one on it. Then again I haven't really liked NAPA for about 15 years now. Try somebody else.
