differential identification

How can I identify which differential I have in a truck that I've just bought. It's an '87 F250. There is a tag on the diff., but it has no name, only a bunch of numbers. Is there a list/instructions somewhere that will let me decode the numbers? The label on the driver's door gives the diff. as a code 28. What does this mean? Help?

There's usually two rows of numbers and letters. Since you have the 10.25" Sterling Rear End, the gears are usaully 3.73. The last three numbers in the top row should tell you, if you see an L between the first number and last two numbers, it's a factory limited slip.

Thanks for the info. about identifying the differential that I have in an '87 Ford F250. The problem is that I typed in the wrong number from the driver's door id tag. The differential code is a 29 (not a 28 as I said in the previous message). What differ. is this? Also, the tag on the rearend has two rows of numbers. The top row is V1060. The bottom row is 55 1026M09. Any hint as to what these mean?

Code 29 indicates a 3.55 ratio . Maybe the others know about the other codes ?
