I have an 86 f-150 that I bought for 500.00. I am having trouble with the firing order and which way the spark plug wires go on the distributor. The Hayes manual says that the number one wire goes after the clip in a counter clockwise direction. I wired it according to the manual and it still won't run. I am getting fire to the plugs but it will not start. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I say, "screw the manual". My manual says the exact same thing for my truck too, it's weird. Anyhow just look for the number one on the distibutor cap, and start from there using their firing order, or the one on your exhaust manifold. (if it has it there, never owned a V8)
Goodluck...

Start by confirming where No. 1 is. Remove No.1 plug, finger over hole, bump starter to feel compression start, line up timing mark to TDC, look to see where roter is pointing, this is where No.1 wire goes. Follow firing order from manual or from intake runner. If nothing else is off too much this will allow it to start. May have to rotate dist. back and forth to get it running so it can be timmed with a light.
