Paint and Interior protectant

Is it still a rip off? The truck is in and the dealer was telling me how I shoud get it. In the past it has always been a rip off. I was wondering if it still is?

Truck is a Lariat (leather interior)

Paint protectant: wax?

Interior Protectant: Scotch-Guard?

I'm sure the dealer's products are superior, with INCREDIBLE guarantees, but ask yourself this: what happens if the dealer goes out of business? I learned that one the hard way when video stores used to make you buy memberships. I shelled out big bucks for the "lifetime" membership, then the store closed a year later. It wasn't MY lifetime they were talking about, but theirs! Or, what if the company that provides the product goes belly-up? What is your "guarantee" worth then?

I guess the two big questions are "How much for it? and is this something you enjoy doing yourself or not. For folks that spend a lot of time cleaning and waxing their vehicles, it's probably a waste of money. If you'd rather just sail through the car wash and deal with it as little as possible, it may not be a bad idea if the price is reasonable.

Those protectants are a joke. Go to the local auto store and buy scotchguard/etc in a spray can or 2 and spray away. It will cost you almost nothing, the dealer will charge around $200 or so. Same goes for wax on a new truck, get some carnuva wax, like the last step of the Mothers wax for your new truck. This will be another few hundred from the dealer. And as far as the undercoating, crawl under your truck and check whats not painted. If you want it painted, get some flat black primer and spray away. Wont cost a few hundred for that either. Just remember, that deal for $500 or so to do all three... your cost doing it yourself will be under $40.

The dealer's interior protection pkg in a cloth interior is a rip off, in the Lariat leather it is an outright scam. I got suckered into it on my 04 Lariat. I turned it down on my 05 and bought the Meguiars Gold Classic Rich leather wipes at Walmart for 10 bucks and treated my seats. They look better , feel richer, and smell great. I used it on the steering wheel and it is great. It does not make the wheel slippery . When I got my dealer to do the 04, I saw no difference and whatever they used (probably a damp cloth ) was not near as good as this Meguiars product and you get 10 wipes. It takes two to do the leather in a CC so you have enough for 5 applications and it is a cleaner and conditioner all in one. Remember in a Lariat, only the seating surfaces are leather.
The rest of the seats are a close matching vinyl so you can use Armorall on that.
