i have recently found a shell of a ford falcon. although i do not know the yr model i want to know if this is considered a rare,or extremly expensive to restore. i would like to also know why the ford falcon was discontinued
They are not considered rare, so unless it is complete and rust-free, it is probably not worth restoring. 1960-63 models were more "rounded" in shape than the 1964 and later models. I dont remember the year production ended. A Mustang costs the same or less to restore but will be worth much more when done due to demand. The Maverick was the replacement. Ford just needed a new marketing angle for small cars. The Dart, Valiant and Chevy-II suffered a similar fate.
For most people, the "real" Falcon was discontinued in '69, making room for the Maverick in 1970. However, there was a 1970 Falcon, a stripped-down Torino 2-door sedan. I've never seen one in person, but I know a handful were built (talk about rare!). You say the car is a shell, so I doubt it's worth putting money into. If the car was complete and needed just some work, and it was a convertible or a 2-door Sprint, then it would be a different story. But Falcons were today's Focus: inexpensive, basic, and a dime a dozen.
In my opinion any car is worth restoring if the person likes that make of car. There are cars with more demand but who wants to be like everyone else. Alot of people do not think Fairlanes are worth anything. I am a Fairlane fan and that is why I got 2 67 Fairlanes. My latest a GT I just got a month ago. It needs alot of work and probably will cost more to restore than a Mustang but I and the wife like them so that is what counts, in my opinion. If you like it buy it and dont worry what others think...
My first memories of cars were in my Mom's 66 Ford Falcon, I think it had a "Futura" logo on the side. Is that the same thing as a Falcon? The car is a distant memory, but it sure would be great to see that funny-looking blue car (It was originally silver) puttering down the road again. If I recall, it had a bright red interior, I think that was a very popular color in those days.
I remember complaining to my Mother to change the radio from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles a few times.
I think at this point, i.e. 40 years later, any restored falcon will turn heads and attract a crowd. There aren't any on the roads out my way. They are part of history and will look good with classic tags on the back!!!!

Falcon's are rare, at least here in NY, yes they were an inexpensive car in they're day.
However because of that many were hot-rodded, crashed, crushed, or simply left behind the barn to rot. Will it ever fetch a major price like the mustang, probably not, but depending on condition and options who knows. The falcon sprints came with v-8's and are very desireable, verts. are always desireable. Parts may be a little difficult to come by especially sheet metal as not much reproduction is happening at this time.
Ck. carefully the cond. of the car, if you can pick it up for the right price it's always worth it. If it's too much work to restore the entire car or parts from it can be sold, (ck. e-bay for pricing) look before you list! Personally I hope you can restore it as cars that are 30 or more yrs. old are increasing in value far faster than any stocks that I know of. just my .02
I think the little Falcon's will be worth on up there soon, I own a 61 2dr Futura, the car was givin to me, took me about a year to restore it. I kept it all original with the 144 6 cyl and took it to a car show two years ago and was offered $8,000 like it set and the interior wasnt even completed. I took my 71 Mustang with it and to my surprise every place I stopped before and after I got there, people were more interested in the Falcon, so they must be making a comeback, especially with the older crowd.
Just to clear something up.
Falcons were never dicontinued, they just ceased production in North America, thats all.
We have had the Falcon manufactured here in Australia since '63, and you can still buy a 2005 Falcon, just only in Australia thats all...
Did you guys ever get Falcons with 351C's?
We first got them in '69 I believe, they were the fastest 4 door car in the world for like 15 years (400hp from the factory does that).
that's the beauty of not so popular cars, you can pick them up for less, but rebuild tham to be the way YOU want them. Didn't like the powertrain options? Install what you want. Interior wasn't how you want, make it the way you want. Sure you can do that to any car, but the ones that aren't as popular get noticed more because they are different. I would hope most of the sheet metal is there, because if it isn't it could be a problem finding the replacements.
