the U-joints are a good suspect for the noise. just b/c the 4 wheel drive isn't engaged it dose't mean that the axel shafts arn't spining. Almost every 4 wheel drive truck i see on the road I can see the front axle shaft u-joints spinning. also going back the the discussion on manual vs. auto lockers. Auto lockers are fine but i prefer my manuals b/c of the lower maintence required on them. I prefer to spend the extra time that I'm not maintaining my truck to go 4 wheeling.

Take a good look at your brake pads, they should be wearing evenly, if there not it seems like the brake calipers are sticking, replace the brake caliper(s) and brake pads, turn rotors and test drive.
