Alright i know this is not the best thing to do but i was wondering if it would be ok from time to time. I have a daily driver 94 f-150 with a 5.0 and e4od and was wondering if i am going to hurt anything by towing with it. What i will be towing is a 5400 lb mudbogger on a 16 foot bumper hitch trailer...not sure how much the trailer weighs. I want to us it if for some reason i cant use my 89 1 ton diesel i would like to be able to use it as a back up. I know it will be a dog pulling but what i am concerned with is will it cause damage to my tranny as long as i turn of the od. BTW i will not be towing it long distances (under 100 miles).
Sounds like you'll be towing about 7000 lbs. I don't think that will hurt the tranny as long as you don't heat it up on the hills. I would put an aftermarket aux tranny cooler on it and keep it out of OD, as you mentioned.

I think you need to be more concerned about towing that much load on a bumper hitch. IMHO You need a receiver hitch to handle that.
My tranny shop told me to tow in OD as long as the tranny wasn't hunting in & out a lot. If ya got a hill to get over take it out of OD until you are cruising again.
With the standard 3.55 gears your GCWR should be 11,000. That gives you about 7000 lbs for a trailer behind an empty 2WD regular cab, somewhat less with 4WD and/or Supercab. If you are not climbing mountains and you keep it out of OD, it should be fine. The 5.0 likes to rev, so do not be afraid to use the E4OD like a manual tranny when necessary, which is what I do in the mountains with my camper mounted.
The E4OD should handle the load just fine assuming it has a adequate cooler. I tow a 4800 lbs car/trailer combo regularly with my 5.0/4R70W and have 230,000 miles on it, the vast majority towing that load.
I usually tow in OD but most of my towing is long distances. For your application I would cancel OD, not for the sake of the transmission but for the engine. The 5 liter will haul the load but like someone noted above the oversquare architecture of the engine means it must rev to make power. And with that much load on a 150 chassis, I wouldn't get in a hurry. Make sure you have trailer brakes too.
well i just back from california to utah, and 800 mile trip. i towed back my 4000lbs big block 73 mustang on a dolly and the car being stuffed to ****. i am dead sure its at least 5000lbs. i used my 96 5.8 bronco with a e40d. i got a big external trans cooler from factory and i put in synthetic blend fluid in her.
she towed completely fine, the only time i noticed i had a load behind me was going up hills and and starting from a dead stop on a hill. in california i could only drive 55mph and not using OD then i got 11.5 miles a galloon gonig up and down hills. once i got to I15 going ot nevada i used OD whenever i could and got 12mpg, i never used it going up hills. on really steep hills i would go like 1/2 throttle and i'll be going at least 55mph still.
however, i checked the tranny fluid everytime i stopped to make sure the tranny was burning fluid. if the tranny is getting really hot i would assume it would burn up a little fluid and discolor the fluid. well the trans fluid stayed the same and didn't burn a drop. i did however put synthetic blend.
on the last 170 miles of the trip was all flat roads, fillmore utah to Ogden/HILL AFB ut, i used OD the entire time going 65mph and got an imazing 14.1mpg. 169 miles using only 11.9 galloons.
i'd think you'll be ok but you do got about 25hp less and so so amount of torque less.
seriously the stang is almost 4000lbs. its a 73 mach 1. from factory they advertise 3800lbs. well i added the extra weight of a of a 460 from a 351c. they weight roughly 180lbs heavier than a 351c. i put the car on a base lift and it has a weight gauge on it. it almost tipped the needle to the 4000lbs mark.
i can take her to a weigh station to make sure. but yea, this is the BIGGEST MUSTANG THEY EVER MADE!!!! it looks heavy and is heavy. this ain't no 66 mustang that weights 3200 or a mustang 5.0 that weights 3300. this is a hefty 3800lbs car that added 180 worth of a BBF.
