Casting & date codes location?

Hi all. I'd like to know where on my 351 C block to look to find the pertinent date codes and whatnot. I bought my truck (86) with the motor already in it, so I have no idea what year engine it is.

Also, I'd like to know how I can tell if I have 2bbl or 4 bbl heads (without pulling a head or manifold), which for now I'm going to assume are original to the motor. Is there a particular casting code to look for that delineates between the two?

Thanks in advance.

The casting and date codes on the block are in the rear of the block next to the oil pressure sender.

If you have a cast iron manifold and a 2V carb, it is a 2V motor with 2V heads. If you have a cast iron 4V manifold, then you have 4V heads. The head casting codes are under the exhaust manifold flange on the heads and very difficult to see with the heads on the motor. If you have an aftermarket aluminum intake, look for a 4 on one corner of the head. That indicates it is a 4V head. The head casting codes will tell you whether it is an open or closed chamber head, but if you remove the head to see them, you will know already.

Thank you, Danlee.

Sorry, should've mentioned that it's got an aftermarket 4 bbl intake. So, if my heads have no "4" on the corner of the head, then they are a 2bbl head? I ask because I have seen pictures of Cleveland heads with a "2" in that location, but my heads do not appear to have either number at all, which I hope explains my confusion.

Tom Monroe's book says that the 'Block casting numbers are found under the rear of the right cylinder bank. The casting date is there also.'

If there is no '4' on the heads then they must be 2V heads.

Okay. I'll try to get a look at that location, maybe with a small mirror.

Thanks again, danlee. Whan I get a look at the #'s, I'll post up to see how they break down.
