When driving my truck I only get the burnt gun powder smell when i am climbing hills. It seems like as soon as the tranny down shifts and the motor starts working it starts to stink.
I've been researching and found that it could be a bad cat, and too rich of a fuel mixture. The o2 sensors are new so i know that isn't the problem.
also I was told that when a torque converter is starting to go bad it may stink, but i don't think that is the problem.
i was wondering how i can make sure the converter is bad so i know for sure that is the problem?
Thanks
Is your cat new? I am not running rich, nor is my o2 sensor bad and when I kick it up a notch mine will stink too. It is very normal for new cats. If you have ever driven a new car you will notice this smell every once in a while too.
Usually when a cat is going bad, plugging up, they will have a sulfur or rotten egg smell. If you go to the back of the truck, and see if it smell like that while it is idleing(Not recomended to stay long), but you should be able to tell pretty quick. Do you notice any change in power or does it seem to be a bit doggy? That could be a sign also, plus the cat will start getting red hot the more it gets plugged. After enough time it will not even run. If you cant tell your self, take it to a shop you trust and have them check the cat for you, never hurts to put a new one on if you can afford it. Plus it will rule that part out. Good luck
If you are only getting the noticable smell when the engine is under load, do the "sniff test" as suggested to see if its not always there and just getting worse when the engine works harder. If not, do a thorough check of the EGR and Thermactor systems. Too little fresh air injected into the cat will result in a "rich" situation causing this problem which can be a faulty Thermactor system or EGR system.
I am not sure but i think the cat is still the one from the factory. at about 125,000 miles it think it is time to replace it any ways. i will probably get a second opinion from the local shop and go from there.
i haven't noticed any great loss in power it just seems to raise the temp of the motor a bit but that is normal when climbing hills.
As for the egr system i have had it apart and it seems good.
is there any chance it could be from timing being off or ignition related. the reason i ask is that when i put a timing light on it the mark were no where is sight until i was around 180 degrees. it is supposed to be 10 degrees btdc. i think i had the light set at 174 degrees and that was the lowest i could go befor it idled like crap. i ended up adjusting it on the road and just kept adjusting until there wasn't any more pinging when going up hill.
Thanks.
