Stinky exhaust
1988 E150 van with EFI 300-six, bought used with a lot of miles, not long ago. I have had few cars with catalytic converters (and greatly prefer older, simpler vehicles). I'm quite sure FoMoCo would not have built a car that smelled quite this bad when new. Is there a particular way that Ford cats degrade that makes them smelly? It isn't plugged yet, or not badly anyway. I have changed plugs (which had been in so long as to be hard to read, but didn't seem to be greatly rich or lean), replaced the O2 sensor, and rebuilt the EGR valve, also added a new air filter. This van does have an AIR pump; I am assuming it's working.
Is the stink normal, given my description? Is there a particular replacement cat everybody likes?
