found a 55 ford body on a newer 4x4 chassis that i am told by the owner has a 1966 428 police interceptor engine that has a weind intake and MSD ignition along with a C6 tranny. He wants $1200 for the truck with a rusted out body.
Is there such a thing as a 66 428 interceptor motor and how would you ID it?
What is the motor worth running? (truck was put together about 20 years ago)

One thing that you might do is look for the number between the two middle spark plugs on the head. I should be something like C6AE D

66 Police blocks were cast with C6AE-B and C6AE-F, both were solid lifter motors. You are going to have to check for the 3.984 stroke to be sure of the crank inside. Remember, just about every FE is a 390 or 428 when they go up for sale....

All 428 engines had a hydralic cam and lifters, even the PI ans CJ's.The PI's ran the CJ cam, the aluminum intake(which you say is now after market) but used the standard 390/428 heads and not the big valved CJ pieces. I would suspect that it is not a PI for one reason, why swap out a very good aluminum intake for another aluminum piece that won't improve the preformance any? If it is a 428, check the stroke or pull the pan and chek the crank are the only ways to check I would suspect it's a stocker, which is not bad as even the standard 428's were ground stompers. The compression on even the stockers was 10.5 to 1 back then and it will be a premium gas motor only.

Bear good point about the PI intake. Those are great intakes. $1200 is a good chunk of change and i'd ask him to verify it's a 428. I'd also check the overbore to see how much life is left in the cyl walls. For $1200 it could be a good engine or a boat anchor but I would want to see. If it's a 428 his asking price is reasonable depending on the running condition of the engine. Most guys will want to check the bore and stroke anyway so he should not object to a little show and tell. Offer to buy him a new set of head gaskets for the trouble. $30 now is a lot better than $1200 later only to find a 390. JMO, G.
