hi everyone. for a long time now i have wanted to convert my 90 bronco from efi to carbed. -Pat (17)
You know, every one and a while some-one will come on here and state that they want to turn their fuel injected truck to a carb for whatever reasons. (We'll leave the possible legal issues out for now). And everytime they do, everyone jumps in and says "Why? why? why?. Dont do it! EFI is so much better! Dont waste your time." It gets old.
And yes, they are right. It would be a major pain in the *** to convert back to carb'd. It would be much easier and probably cheaper to simply trouble-shoot the problem and fix it. So what we have is hundreds of threads of why NOT to convert from EFI to carb, instead of useful advice on HOW TO do it.
What I like seeing in this forum is useful answers to a posters specific question, and not a barrage of posts on why not to do something. Now I dont know what the process is to convert from EFI back to carb. If I did, I would give this guy a step-by-step answer. But I do hope someone here who does know how will step up and give him the answer to his question.
well i do appreciate that, i have to make that statement. And to some extent, i do agree. if i know what the conversion consists of, i could probably make a better decision (even though everyone here is probably right in my case). don't get me wrong, everyone has helped me big time.
what if someone was on a forum asking what steps would be involved to do something very bad and destructive which could hurt them and everyone knew it. I think its best if the people that answer say, "no you shouldn't do this, its bad." Thats just good advice there.
I can give him all the advice he needs on doing it. I removed enough wire from my truck to wire a house!!!! I just think he was venting and sending out feelers as to what other people thought, which is smart! However if he decided to do it, it would be a step by step process. I.E. I now have the intake and carb bolted on, now what???? Fuel line, fuel pump, return line, ignition system, distrubuter, schematic(what color is this wire, that does this??), charging system. Trust me the list is endless, let alone he better be damn good at wiring! I just think he is looking for opinions and he got them. I bet he'll never screw up that "o"-ring installation again. Live and learn my friend. I am 36 years old and still screw up (you can ask my wife). As long as you learn something from the mistake, than all is not lost! Oh yeah, and not repeat them!
bigredbeast. go to that website i posted earlier. there is an electrical plug that will make the ecu think the egr is working fine but in reality is disconnected. then just make yourself a plate to cover the egr spot on the intake. plug the tube running from the exhaust manifold with a threaded cap. there are also other sensors on that sight that will help clear some of the codes your getting. i really suggest you read up on that site it will give you such a better understanding and were to cut corners safly
ok everyone...you convinced me to stay with the efi. as much as i don't want to- i'll be going through gas like crazy considering its my everyday truck. on the other hand, i still want to clean up the engine compartment. i really never thought about the whole everyday vehicle thing.
so i thank you for your input but don't go "x" out of this post just yet. i am asking for your help now with "cleaning up" my engine. i am hoping to get rid of my emissions considering my pump is not even working. that will eliminate a whole lot of hoses right?
There are alot of things you can do to clean up a EFI engine, and I will admit that when I got my 88' it was pretty sloppy in there with vac lines and wires all over the place, here's some of the thing's that I did, btw my truck is blue, I rerouted all the vac lines with new blue ones, moved the canisters from the inner wheel to the radiator support(under the battery tray) blue ford racing plug wires with chrome wire looms, goodyear hi-miler radiator hose kit(blue) covered all the wiring with new blue and black wire looms, it was starting to get alittle to blue in there, so the point is you can make them look really good under the hood while retaining all your emissions and you are only limited by your own imagination, I wish I had a digatal camera to take some picks but I spent all my money on all that blue stuff which dosent make it run any better but it sure looks pretty..
My suggestion to you is to go to your local newsstand / bookstore and pick up a copy of MUSTANGS AND FAST FORDS magazine. You will see countless aftermarket parts for Fuel Injected Motors and carbed motors. You will see pics of engines both carbed and injected that will make you drool! You will be amazed how fast the ideas will pop into your head. I can tell you are like me, and everybody else on the site, you what it to stand out, be eye catching, and not like everyone else's. I know your type!

unfortunetly, i have never seen one of them, i've never really looked for that specifically though. i will definetly look into it. sounds like a good place to start.
yesterday i was at my firehouse and i saw an old f-150 that someone donated for drilling. they don't have 351's do they? the carb and manifold are new it looks like. if that engine is the same as mine, it would be a crazy coincidence that what im looking for is right there. please let me know. i know that an old f-150 is very general but i have no idea how i would be able to find out what engine is in it.
The lower intake on on 302 is about 9" accross and the 351 is 11". Can you undo the thermostat housing with a ratchet and extention, then you have a 351. You could always check the VIN# or the Engine info sticker under the hood.

hey anyone have any pics of their f.i. bronco's? or carbed?
Yea check out my gallery. I do have pictures of my EFI 351W(5.8L) 1990 Bronco.
Also, one question, which I will probably get dinged for, What tranny do you have? Just checking. If it's the E4OD like mine, then the biggest concern in converting to Carb, is still having a computer to controll the tranny. One solution for this is with Baumann Electronic Controls at http://www.becontrols.com/ they have a stand alone computer just for this type of concept. Especially for those of us that have the electronically controlled Transmisions.
BTW: If you do decide you want to take your rig off-roading, then Fuel Injection is the probably the best way to go. Carburation will work, but there will be problems when it comes to extreme angles.
tomorrow i will be at the firehouse checking if the lower intake manifold is 11in. and if it is, i am taking it out and holding on to it- just in case. hell, i should take the whole engine out, rebuild iit, and throw it in my beast.
