I was reading threads about how people w/ the IDI Turbo motors buy pyrometers when they turn their IP up.. But some say that it was a waste of money because the engine never gets hot enough w/ the stock turbo.. Can anyone clarify that for me? I dont do any towing just go wheeling a bunch and i want to turn my IP up.. and hopefully save myself some unnecessary expenses.. thanks again!
do not touch your IP without the ability to monitor EGTs... with or without a turbo, you can easily destroy that engine. even if you only turn the screw a few flats...
do you know the history of the fuel system? what i mean is - are the injectors all operating per spec? is the fuel pump? and the IP? is it timed correctly?
i think if you're going to do any fuel mods, a pyro is mandatory (and next on my list). the uneccessary expense would be a Jasper crate engine after you melt yours...
And if you melt yours, you are looking at about 8000 dollars for a reman turbo motor by the time you have it installed.
A good pyrometer will be less than 200.
And you do not have to tow or haul heavy loads to get the EGT hot enough to do damage to the engine. I can get mine just as hot running up a hill empty as I can hauling a 13,000 pound trailer.
