Track bar problems

I hope someone out there can help me with this! There is alot of play in my sterring wheel and i have tracked it down to the track bar. The mounting bracket on the axle is out ot round and allows the track bar to shift when the sterrring wheel is turned. I have had people tell me to weld the bolt into place, but i'm not sure if this is safe. Any info would be helpful Thanks!!

good question, i am sure axle builders dont weld the bolts in, maybe they drill out the bracket oversized and press some kind of hardened sleeve in its place

somebody here must know something about this, just give them some time

Man, I was really hoping this thread would get a lot of replies cause I have the same problem with my '77 F150 4X4. Tightened up everything and replaced the bushings with minimal results. You can see slop in the axle to trac bar joint fifty feet from my truck. Makes it interesting chasing the thing on a strong side wind driving down the road. I looked on Jeff's Bronco Graveyard and they sell a trac bar stud for the '78-'79 Bronco. I don't know if is just a replacement part for Broncos or if it is an aftermarket solution to the problem. I emailed their tech department for info. I'll post what results they inform me off. Till then I'm at a loss for a solution and open to any and all suggestions.

What year/model truck? 2wd or 4wd?

Search this forum for "track bar bushing" and you'll get some good info.

To fix it, you can drill out the hole and sleeve it, or weld it up and re-drill it. When you do it, replace the bushings with poly, not rubber.

Good luck.

Pull out the bolt. Fill weld the hole. Redrill to bolt size. Reinstall bolt. Give it a whirl.

Hey! another question, i just found a trac bar stud on broncograveyard.com. It looks like there is a slight wedge to the bolt. I was woundering if any one has seen it or used it. It would be alot easier if this thing would work.

Well folks, I just got an email from the Bronco Graveyard informing me that that new trac bar stud will not work on my truck's axle (my truck being a '77 F150 4X4). Oh well, looks like I'll be breaking out the welder and drill in the near future.
