Hard starting

I am having a problem with a 1999 Ford ranger with the 4.0 engine When you first start it it will crank but not fire. You then let off the key and try again and it will crank and then fire and idle up to around 2000 rpm and then come right back down. Once it starts and runs for a while it will start right back up and idle fine but if you let it sit for a while it does it again. I have read several posts about the IAC control would this be causing the problem. It has been doing it a while and is driving me crazy.

Sounds like the fuel is draining back into the tank, bad check valve. Try turning the key on ONLY, this will run the fuel pump for a few seconds, turn it off, repeat this several times to build fuel pressure and see if it starts right up.

I tried cycing the fuel pump like you advised and the first time I did it I cycled it 3 times which might have been to much as it fired but seemed to be loading up a little. It seems to help so I will connect my fuel preasure gauge to it and see if over time it leaks down. My next question is the checkvalve located at the regulator or at the fuel pump so that I may change it.

I believe it's in the pump.
