I read all the time that you should drain gas from mowers and such over the winter because the gas can go 'bad'. I have never, ever done that with anything I own and the egines never fail to start the next season. I have a Murray push mower that is over 12 years old that I use to trim with and it always starts on the first pull after three pushes on the primer button. I guess gas can go bad if it sits for a long time but over a 3 month period...it hasn't for me. My riding mower sat in a shed from last October till this month with over half a tank of gas. It fired right up.
I left a 2 gallon plastic can stored with gas, no 2 stroke mix and no sta-bil. 2 months later the gas was flat, wouldn't start anything. So next time I stored the gas after I mixed the 2 stroke oil, same can sat in the same place all winter (4 months) and just last week had no problems starting the blower.
It takes about two weeks for gas to go bad, depending on where you buy it from. I would definetely run sta-bil in there, unless you dump them in your tank and refill them every time you fuel the truck.
Real gas will last several months in a metal container without problems. I have had six month old gas work fine after mixing it up for a second. It might have worked without mixing tho. The volatile parts can't evaporate away when in a sealed metal container.
Plastic containers just don't cut it. They are also permeable to moisture.
