2000 3.8 charging issues
I had a no charge condition and replaced the alternator after the old one tested at 11.4v. later was told by ford that this alternator was untestable outside the vehicle because of the computer inputs are needed to know whether the alternator is responding properly. is this true? Are there a set of proper outputs that can be measuered form the 3-prong connector on the alternator?
there is a harness that plugs in to the alt, as you know. Nowadays, everything is ecu controlled.
the best way to test is to bring it somewhere, like SEARS. it's 9.99 and they check your battery and alt.
Even if the voltage seems okay, the diode can be bad, and you can't see a faulty diode pattern with just a multimeter or anything. Thats why SEARS pays like 3200 for their big 'ol testing thingy. (SABRE)
