Rear axle question
Rear axle question
Does anyone have a diagram or breakdown of the rear axle for a eb expo, I am getting a grind noise when I put it in drive, so I want to pull the cover off and see what gears are mess up and replace them. Thanks
Setting up a rear-end isn't something I'd try to do myself. To avoid future problems and noise, you need some tools that aren't common in a DIY'ers toolbox. My advice is to find a reputable off-road shop and let them make the repairs. Those guys have axles & diffs apart several times a day and are usually very good at repairing them.
As NOMO said the setup of the rear end is critical to the gear life. Most shops know knowing about setting up ring and pinions. Use a good diff shop or as stated a 4X4 shop does these over and over. Not sure of the labor rate in your area but not including parts you are looking at around 200 bucks plus parts. Alos if you are getting a grinding noise when you put it in gear and not not moving the rear end would not be suspect.

You may/maynot want to try. more than likely you know what side your grind is on (mine was driver back)
Jack up this side of your expy.ONLY. allow to idle and place the selector in drive...DO NOT RACE. allow 3-5 min. run time at idle. Tire should spin at low rpm. One tire, one side only!
Let it down and drive ...let us know if that helps! It did a lot for me!

Rear axle grinding noise
Do you have a limited slip? What model year?
Does it do it more when the axle is cold? When you are turning or backing up?
You probabaly have limited slip chatter.
You can fix the problem by putting in new carbon fiber clutch plates. Make sure you use 75W140 synthetic lube (not 75W90). You could rebuild with conventional clutch plates (cheaper), but make sure you soak your plates in lube for a couple of hours before you re-install.

With either of those two options you CAN NOT jack up just one wheel and let it spin. It WILL come off the jack / jack stand and at the very least cause damage to the vehicle if not bodily injury to someone.
I have LS drive…and did jack up one tire, it will spin at idle speed. One should remain in the vehicle while performing this quick fix. As the opposite tire can shift to pull. (Under normal idle not likely.) Possible…not probable.
The clutches do adjust to this and can be referred to as “wear” but then, that’s what they do when the vehicle is in motion anyway…otherwise one would never have to change them.
My point is this …to avoid costly repair “one may want to try it” Ask me if it worked when I did!
No chatter, no grind (cobrah
