I own a 97 f-350 crewcab. The frame has surface rust on it. I am thinking about undercoating the truck with either flat black paint or some type of rubberized underocat. What do you think is the best way to dress the underside of my truck up. Any opinions on the rubberised stuff. How well does it hold up. Also what should I paint/undercoat, and what should I avoid spraying anthing on. Brands of undercoat you like the best would also be helpfull. Thanks.
Whether you paint or rubberize, you'll need to take care of that surface rust first. Sand or wire brush it as good as you can, then treat it with something like Ospho, Metal Ready or the like.
Next, I don't know how well the undercoating works on bare metal so my suggestion would be to paint with a good rust inhibitor such as POR-15 or ZeroRust. I'm painting the underside of our fenders and then spraying on the 3M undercoating for noise factor.
Unless you have access to a lift where you can have it up where you can walk around, I'd suggest brushing the paint on rather than spraying. You'll get a heavier coat and won't have the spray all over you.
There's many threads in the Paint & Bodywork forum on treating & painting rusted areas.
