I just installed an Autometer Pro-Comp pyrometer to replace a VDO unit that I decided was too slow in responding. My problem is that the Autometer unit resembles the second hand of a watch ...... the needle jumps between readings in increments of about 25-50 degrees. This happens going up as well as down in temperature. This is kind of frustrating and I was hoping that someone else had expreienced this and can offer a remedy. My VDO unit though slow was very smooth in its operation and I am wondering why I replaced it.
I was about to post on this topic. I really like my VDO pyro. Steady and smooth. I really don't think its slow though.... I did'nt know any different untill I installed a autometer pyro in my brothers cummins. Its all over the place. Re-acts right with the throttle. Is this normal???
Did you alter the length of the thermocouple leads? Or, does one or the other gauge require an external amplifier?
I was wondering, I was always told not to use any connector on the thermocouple leads that weren't supplied. Screws up the resistance thing in the pyro.... My brother insisted on using regular crimp eye connectors to connect to the back of his pyro. Will this screw with the readings???

yeah it will the gauges are calibrated to a certain resistance rating. the supplied wire and connectors are a certain metal with certain resistance qualities. a bad voltage source will make your gauge go all over the place also. i like the autometers cause there the fastest responding gauges on the market.
Thanks for the reply's. Cookie, I used the wire and connectors just as supplied by Autometer. I did not alter anything. seems to me like there is a problem with the gauge movement itself. I will attempt to contact Autometer and see what they say.
I'm probably a little late on this post, but I would check with autometer. I've got the Autometer sportcomp pyro, and its smooth as silk. I would check your ground first, and if all is well you might have got ahold of a bad thermocoupler.

I think you're probably right. There's not much to the system...just make sure you don't have any exposed wire touching anything it's not supposed to be touching.
