I suppose it depends on the truck owner, and how far he wants to get into "mods", but I've always preferred chips over programmers personally.

I just tried my 3rd SCMT in as many days and my truck just won't run right with the programs installed. After talking with an extremely knowledgable individual last night, I'm going to give the Diablo 3 position chip a go. Got to get my $$$ back on the SCMT first. Wish me luck.

For those eventually willing to get to the higher reaches of the Power spectrum with their engines with future mods, you will find that the Programmers just won't get you the results your looking for, as a custom programmed chip will be much more beneficial for the mods you've just added.

For every day driving, and for those that only wish to increase their power incrementally, the Programmers can do a great job for these minimumal increases, but for higher end power with possible future upgrades, the chips will give you the edge.

There have been enough folks now, that have started with minimal chips/programmers, who can tell you, that if you plan on increasing your mods as time goes on, and you plan on keeping your truck for the long term, the majority of 7.3 owners have gone to multi-position chips. They now come in SIX positions for those that want several programs...from a high idle, to a valet setting, many different tow settings, fuel economy setting, and many high power rubber burning setting for those in need.

Dale
You must not be familiar with the Predator...

Yes chips offer switch on the fly, but that is the ONLY advantage.

I don't have to mail my tuner in for new tunes, or custom tunes (that do all you have mentioned and more...), I simply DL right from my PC off of diablo sport. No shipping charges, and no waiting.

I also don't have to be a contorsionist to reset back to stock programming either.

I ALWAYS have access to the most current tune for my truck via the net at no cost.

I also get a code reader, data logger, and data analyzer. I can also adjust tranny settings and engine functions (depending on model, some more than others).

It already has 5 tunes not counting the stock program, and has room for more!

Yep, us programmers are clueless...

I've had my fair share of chips, but they don't even remotely compare to a tuner (especially a Predator), especially when you consider the near equivalent costs of the two.

Boy that's a BS statement, especially since the chip and programmers use essential the same tuning, and offer similar gains for the tunes on each.

Programmers are very good, and I may end up with one, but dont lump all selectable chips into one group. Jody Tipton at DP Tuner is well known for doing some exceptional custom tunes, I have yet to hear a bad thing about them. He will set them up each persons needs and use, including tranny settings. The best chips are set based on the code thats installed in the PCM, since the tunes a set for that code.

Good to see someone likes his tuner!

All those that I know of in the "high end" Hp range (not speaking of the 6.0 L) are running chips. There again, you may know of some that use tuners...I don't, but that's ok too.

Most folks running in excess of 450 rear wheel HP (that I know of) have chips, so there must be a reason.

I have no anomosity towards anyone having good luck with their tuners...all the better, as we are all here to learn from one another...so thankfully its working well for you!

As for the Diablo...and I've never owned one, but can only say that the power results have been great, but high EGT's have been known to be attached to the Diablo...but overall they work well.
As for "brand names" go with what you like, but I've personally found Dennis Perry and Jody Tipton to be about the best out there for getting the most power out of all the supporting modifications to the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesels..and others.

I see you have the ability to do your own programming...good for you. Anyone can buy a chip programmer and do their own as well, but it cost $$ of course, although I'm sure it does for the tuners as well.

Best of luck with your tuner (Predator) glad you like it!
Do you know what kind of HP you are putting out with it? Just wondering what kind of gains where found?

Thanks...

Dale

Goes to show how little the public know about what their "tuners" are really up to. I know for a fact Dennis didn't write a ton of "his" programs. They were "taken" from various sources (I know the people who wrote them). Back when we carried his stuff we had issues with some programs bogging down and he'd send another file and tell us to "try it." Nope... no fix. I just got back a chip I did two years ago with one of his programs because it doesn't operate correctly at low altitude. That makes it over 1/3 of his chips coming back for problems. MotorHaven stopped carrying them nearly 2 years ago and they are still coming back with problems. There's a lot of slick talking shucking and jivving going on out there. Careful.

I was hoping that you'd chime in on this thread Ken.

You wouldn't happen to be refering to that someone in this thread?

Another link that may be useful on what the Predator dynos on the hottest program.

Here

The Predator has revised it's EGT temps since that review, but it still cranks out the same numbers.

When I make the decision to go with a chip of programmer it will be based on other peoples experience with them. Everyone that I have read running Jody's tunes has had nothing but good things to day about them. I have heard some people with issues running the TS chips, one of them being with the PAT's on the Excursions. Luckily there are lots of options for those of us with the 7.3's everyone should research what they are getting before they lay there cash down.

Nope. This is another past customer with issues with their tunes. He lives at high altitude. He recently took his truck down to low altitude and it runs horribly in any TS setting -- worse than stock. We ruled out everything but the tunes. The chip is on my desk right now.

That's too bad.

Hopefully the PCM doesn't have to end up in the trash bin like what transpired on the thread I mentioned.

........................

As far as Jody's tunes go....

From what I've dug up on the net, the tunes are really nothing special and similar to any tune you can get from anywhere, including FTE.

What really gets me is that when people get their tunes from Jody, they act as if it Jody has some super secret about tuning that even Ford can't do, and every one else is just simply inferior.

Reasons I didn't buy anything from Jody before I came to FTE...

Poor website, the website is your Internet Billboard!!!
Limited information on gains (that I could find on the WS)
Lack of apparent non-phone support, I.E. forums or FAQS.
Looked like just another run-of-the-mill chip tuner

This may have changed since my first chipped Ford, back in '02...But I will continue to praise Diablo and the fantastic work that Ken does.

Over 3 years I've had a single Diablo delta (bought from Ken) that was reflashed for 3 different vehicles. The F-150 I have in my sig had the chip untill Diablo released the Preadator for Ford Gassers, and I sold that chip on Ebay, and bought a tuner from Ken.

That's right, sold the chip for a tuner, even thought the gains were itdentical; I could monkey with all kinds of engine functions, including spark advance and gears, and not to mention the easy updating for custom tunes.

Just recently (about a month ago) I purchased a 7.3L Predator from Ken (hmm, appears to be a pattern here... ), and haven't regretted it one bit.

The difference between a Diablo delta that holds 2 custom tunes and a Predator that holds 5 is a mere $90.

A good code reader alone is $150.

How much did the EGT's drop since diablo redid the programs? Especially on the high end setting.

I can't answer that question directly, as I don't have any guages on my truck at the moment. With that said, I've only been running around on the 60 HP program. I'm just going by what was stated on Motorhaven and other sites.

Maybe Ken might have a inside track on exact numbers.

Maybe some Predator owners will chime in on this.
