Cookie,
So I should just go with a tuner and that will allow me to quickly flip to economy, towing or performance? Does the tuner have the flip switch or is that the chip? The engine is still under warranty so that would be a consideration.
Could I just get the PC interface and do everything I need to with a laptop including monitor stuff?
So far, the only thing I know about deecells is how to spell it.
Everything is still in the planning stages.
(so is the money - hahahaha)
A tuner re-writes the PCM with the tune you desire, much like reformatting your computer's hard drive. It takes a good 10 min to switch tune to tune, and you simply cannot switch tunes quickly. The tuner simply plugs into the ALDL port right above your right foot on the bottom side of the dash. When you are done "tuning" you simply un-plug the tuner.
A chip over-rides the PCM programming and has the ability to switch on the fly, unlike a tuner. However you have to remove the PCM, take it apart, clean the motherboard, and then put it all back together. It's common to repeat this process more than once just to get the chip to operate. You will also have to drill a hole in the dash for the flip switch.
If you go in for warranty work, you will have to take the PCM out, unhook the chip, and then button it all up. The tuner just plugs into the port and reinstalls the original programming, no fuss-no-muss.
The PC interface for the tuner allows you to update to the most current tuner version from www.diablosport.com. It also allows you to track data of various sensors via your computer.

I think Rangerman pretty well covered it. I prefer the multi position chip's flexibility over that of the tuner. They make more power and there are a couple of truly fine custom economy programs out there lately. I also was never really concerned about the warranty. I'll pay to play if it comes down to it.
If you want to do it all from your laptop the software is available, but tweaking your PCM's parameters without some training is risky business.
If you really want a reliable 550 HP, You'll need to save up about half of the value of your truck to get started, that will get your engine. Then you can start beefing up the rest of the drivetrain to handle the 1000+ ftlbs. of torque you'll be making
get the diablo and put it on the second setting... you will see her again... someday... in your rearview mirror... you'll just be able to make out her vehicle through the smoke...!
There is a dodge van mid 70's area running around denver with a nasty, nasty 440 in it. It runs high 11's/low 12's at bandimere(what 5600 ft??) and it makes a fool out of just about anyone expecting a van.
Those minivans are no slouch, my mom has a '97 Dodge grand caravan with the 3.8L V6, boy is that thing snappy. You'd be surprised what they can do... well, I guess you found out... hahaha
Sorry!
Do a little work on your truck, and you'll smoke her right back. I think in the range of $1500-$2000 you can get close to 350+hp out of your truck, if you do your shopping right, intake, exhaust, gauges, shift kit, custom chip. And you'd be amazed and how much of a difference that will make!
Ok, NASA? Cancel my order for the rocket boosters....
Hello? Fisher Price? Yeah, about that toy truck....
Hmmm, guess I'll settle for a bit less...
I'll go with the Diablo chip.
If I can't outrun Soccer Mom at least she'll gag on the smoke!
Thanks guys...
Steve..
Yeah...You can bolt on all the pieces needed for that kind of power for around 10 grand....but the stock bottom will not live long. All that power doesn't do much good with a fist sized hole in the block.
A good intake, big exhaust, gauges, a hot chip and some tranny mods will put you between 300-330 at the rear wheels, which in my opinion is about as far as you'd want to take a PMR (powdered metal rods) engine and expect it to live a long and healthy life.
Boy, if you guys think the Dodge Caravan is fast with only 180HP for the V6 model, you better watch out for those Honda minivans putting out a whopping 3.5L V-6 255HP engine.
A stock PSD can't beat too many vehicles on the road off the line.

Ok, working on the exhaust, you've probably seen the thread, the chip I have questions on, that's another thread.
The intake, would that be Tymar? I googled it and just found forums, no sales areas. Got a link?
Gauges, that will be anothen thread after I write this.
Tranny mods? Guess I have something else to research....
Thanks cookie...

Call Dale Isley 509-922-8785. He is Tymar. He doesn't have a real website right now, just reserved space (www.tymarperformance.com). Great guy to talk to. I talked to him for around a half hour the other day about modifications and I haven't even bought anything from him yet. He really goes the extra mile for you.
Good luck
I am fairly certain no one really cares, but the late 80's caravans/voyagers (maybe early 90's too) had the 2.2 turbo motor as an option. Same motor as the omni GLH (goes like hell). This could be tuned up very cheaply for similiar money to our powerstrokes. The video mentioned above about the van smoking a camaro was a turbo 12sec run. I hate minivans but I think I'd be laughing everytime I drove that.
