Help!
I'm new to this site and to flatheads. I have a '53 f-100 w/ the original flatty v-8.
I would like to know if a '46 Flatty will bolt in and what problems I might encounter. There is an auction that closes tomorrow. Before I bid, I would like to be sure it will bolt up. I know this is short notice, but I would be extremely grateful for some solid advice,
Hi and welcome to FTE!
The short answer, no, it's not a bolt in project. '46 engines have a half-bell cast into the back of the block so you'll have to make an adjustment where your clutch housing bolts on.
The distributor is on the front of the engine so you'd need to use the pulleys and belts from the '46. You may or may not have space problems and radiator shroud issues.
And the motor mounts are different, but could be made to work I think. Front is easy, but I believe your 53 block has ears on the back for mounting that the '46 doesn't have.
I could be done, but you'd be ahead to look for a 48 - 53 truck engine OR 49-53 car engine. Hope this helps.

Thank you for geting back to me and for the info! Saved me from buying a problem for myself. I'm going to roll a lower end into my existing motor, as my compression is good.

Thanks Again,

If I were you I would have it magnafluxed to make sure the block is ok, before dumping a lot of time and money into it. I have purchased 3 8BA blocks so far and all are cracked. I'm about ready to give up and just purchase a crate engine when I can afford it.
