Checking Codes/ Power loss 89 300ci CA model

Hey guys. I just bought an 89 f150 300 5speed with new motor/trans with 50k on them. This truck was one owner and a CA truck the guy drove back here to VA. The thing is mint but has some hesitation and also every once in awhile it searches for an idle when first started. Im not new to fords or even this motor but this is my first FI 300 and certainly my first CA model so im not sure how fineky the emissions stuff is. A few times i have had the 'check engine' light come on very briefly, sometimes 5 or 6 times in a row but it never stays on. This is usually just after I have started out from a stop but no amount or trying can i duplicate it. The truck leaves the line fine if you get it to about 2k before you let the clutch out but sometimes lower then that it seems to grab or drop the rpms down quick. My Carbbed straight six in my bronco has gobs of torqe and ive never had any problems like this even with 200k on the orig motor. Granted its a NP435 behind it and not the 5 speed but gearing aside it should still leave the line without hitting 2k.

What i would like to know is if anyone has come across this problem before and if you have a procedure to check codes by jumping pins on this truck. Im still searching around a bit but havent found what i needed yet.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

matt

I have. Started just like you say, then ended up that the CEL stayed on any time the engine was warm. Turns out it was the throttle body gasket got sucked into the intake so there was an air leak there. also my "coffee can" was all rotted out. Not sure if it was leaking but i made a new one out of some PVC anyways.

I wrecked the intake manifold (broke an easy out off in an EGR bolt that snapped off. dont do that.) so after i go to the u-pull-it and get a new old one i'll know if the TB gasket/vacuum leak was what caused it.

thanks 93 greenf150. I dont know where my mind was. Ive got two manuals for this truck and for some reason i didnt think pulling codes would be in there. I pulled 32 and 67 off it last night. 32 being stuck egr or egr valve pos sensor voltage low which could be clogged exhaust from what im reading and kinda what i suspected. and 67 i find to be MLP out of range(manual lever position) or clutch switch failure(which the truck still starts) or N/drive switch open which seems to be on e40ds. any light shed on the last code would be great help. the truck has a 5speed which i assume is the zf?.

thanks

It's not the ZF, it's the Mazda 5 speed.

The 67 code means that you didn't push the clutch in for the duration of the test.

Fix the other code, reset the computer, and try it again. The behavior that you're talking about is definately not normal. Both my truck will pull strong right from idle in first gear.

thanks andy. my aftermarket manual didnt show 67 in the code list and didnt say to press the clutch. Now I know. I knew something was way off cause my bronco will pull out in 3rd, granted its a np435 but still.

i will update after i check and clean the egr.

I couldnt get the egr off last night. I ran out of penetrating anything and managed to get the top bolt out. i was working on the bottom one but it didnt feel good so i decided to put it back in and snap. so that sucks. I did however check the evp sensor and it seemed to be good. it was around 4k ohms when out and down to around 100ohm in but jumping the other two pins the resistance was to be no less then 100ohm i got 60ohms ever time. Im going to price out a sensor. It idled a little better this morning, even with one bolt broken on the egr, but it still isnt perfect. I think the cats are clogged so im going to check them out.

still havent had much of a chance to do anything. i was busy rebuilding and installing my np435 in my bronco this weekend, twice(throwout bearing came off and i didnt notice it first time around). I did mess with the truck a bit and manage to break the vac line going to the egr. It runs a whole lot better when the egr doesnt get a vac signal and open up. hopefully in the next few days my exhaust parts will be here and i will get some more exhaust flow and clean that egr up. Ill take some pics of the exhaust when im done.
thanks
