Rhino lining in a bronco

I've got a 78 Bronco that had some nasty carpet in it when I bought it so I ripped it out. Now its just a bare floor and was thinking about putting a coating of rhino lining in it or something cheaper. I want to cover the whole inside of the thing. Has anyone done this? If so do you think its worth the money? I've heard estimates of $400-$600 to do it myself.

I Herculined the undercarriage of my bronco, for $130. I dont see why the cost would be much more for a few more square feet. If you have rusting or anything, you need to address that before putting any sort of coating on it. The coating makes the conditions much worse, much faster.

I considered Rhino lining the entire interior from the mid-line down and across the floor. The cost got a bit silly as you pointed out $400-$600. I have a gallon of Durabak on order to do exactly what you are talking about. The total cost as of this moment is about $140-150. The application process is simple and the information on their site is really rather encouraging as far as results are concerned. The gallon comes with a roller cover and complete application instructions. When it arrives I'll update.

If you have ANY rust at all, clean up the area and coat it with POR-15 first. This will neutralize the corrosion before you seal it under the new coating.

Even if you spend $200-300 on the project its still more cost effective in the long run considering that even brand new carpeting will eventually trap moisture under it, stain, fade, rip and snag. A water-proof, non-slip coating like rhino-lining, Herculiner, or Durabak will seal out the elements and give you an interior that can be easily hosed or wiped down without concern over mildew or rust starting.

Durabak is good, but get a dark color. I got tan and it shows dirt and also doesn't match eddie bauer tan.

Currently in the process of doing the same thing... the biggest pain of it all is going to be cleaning and sanding the entire interior. I may also need another gallon of the stuff - I can't imagine one being enough. Once it's sanded they suggest cleaning again then applying a degreaser cleanser to the entire project. Since I want to do the interior trim as well, this is a beast of a task.

I asked a local shop for a estimate on using a herculiner on my bronco like what you sayed, the entire floor to the tailgate. He said he would mask and spray on the liner for $500. I said ok and walked out. That is a little to much for me I would much rather do everything my self for a lot less money for work I wouldn't mine doing myself.

I'm with graystreak92, I would go out and buy a gallon or even 2 for about 80-100per gallon, plus get all the rollers and everything else for a little bit more money. A total cost of about $200 with 2 gallons and rollers.

If you do it your self be prepared to spend a 1/2 day to a full day on applying the liner.

Good luck

andrewjwatson, did you apply durabak to the entire interior of your Bronco your self? Also, how much did you need(gallons?), how many coats did you put, is it standing up good (lasting with out wear),and how much did you buy it for ($$$)?

Sorry so many questions, but would really like to do this and get some advise from someone that used this product.

Thanks, Matt

Yes, I did the whole interior and tailgate with tan durabak. It came with two roller pads.

I used a gallon and was able to put two coats. It holds up fine, but it looks a little thin in places. I kind of wish i got a gallon and an extra pint.

If you don't line the tailgate, i bet a gallon would cover real well.

Also, I think that if you put on a darker color like black, blue, or grey, that a gallon would cover it well enough.

A gallon of durabak costs from like 80 to 130. Tan was a more expensive color, it was 120. But dont buy tan. It doesn't match the interior tan color. Go with something darker. I wish i just stuck with navy blue (the color of my bronco) or black or maybe grey.

andrewjwatson, when you say "whole interior and tailgate" did you do the door panels and b-pillar? I am curious, I am about to do the same to mine - in black - replacing the carpeted/upholstered pieces on the doors with diamond plate - I fear I will need more than a gallon to pull this off...

andrew, thanks for the info I think I might get 2 gallons, because I have other projects that I could use the extra stuff with. I will be doing floor pans, tailgate, and mabye even some under the Bronco(wheel well etc.)

I will be going with the Black, and I will want a pretty thick coat of this stuff, sounds good to me.

i just did the floor and tailgate, not the doors or the panels or anything. I did take the panels off and spray undercoating though. Yes, black is the right choice. Make sure to differentiate between textured and smooth when you order it. I think textured is the way to go.

Thanks andrew, I'll get 2 gallons of textured durabak, this will be my next big project.

Also, greystreak92 you mentioned POR-15, what does the 15 stand for. I have some rust on my floor pans so I would really like to do something like this to treat my rust. Did you or anyone else on here have to do this rust treatment process, and if so did you have any holes form rust to cover up, if you did what did you do to cover them up?

Aaaah, to live and buy vehicles in the desert... I have only two small patches on the body above the rear wheels and a little bubbling starting on the bottom of the tailgate. The wheel wells will just be cut out completely for flares and bigger tires.
