After buying a MSD-6AL and a MSD Blaster Coil to up my power, I ran into a small problem. Where the hell do you mount it??
My rig is a 90 F-150 w/ 300-6. I looked at just about every spot under the hood and was only able to find one spot where it would even fit, but only three of the feet would be touching.
Any help as to where any of you put it would be a great help, including if you had to move anything.
Thanks!
How much wiring is included with the box itself?
I have been thinking about adding the box, I already have the coil. I'm thinking about fabricating a bracketto mount where my fuel and computer realy are, and just moving those to relays back a few inches. It should not be a problem if there is enough wiring. And then mount it flat face up, that way when you open the hood "everybody" sees it.
If your wanting to fab a mount try some light guage sheet metal. I think thats what I'm going to do.
The wires for the Coil / Distributor connection are about 30 inches long. The Ground is about 8 inches and the Hot about 14 inches. I was considering moving the Lug Wrench off the drivers side fender, but i'm not too sure about how i'll mount those virbration feet. I did consider making a mounting surface out of some Stainless sheet metal, above the wiring harnesses, right next to and below the EEC Test connector and Fuel Pump Relay. But I'd probably have to mount it on the plastic wheel well. It should hold up though. I do think it'll be pain, but worth it in the end!
I mounted mine on the passenger side fender. If you choose to do this- make sure you mount it as low as you can to avoid having the hood spring hit the box when closing the hood. I got rid of the factory jack and jack mount and put the box there.
Ok, I ended up mounting the MSD 6AL on the passenger side wheel well. I removed the vaccuum canister (coffee can looking thing), temporarily mounting it beside the A/C canister. Then i put the MSD on the wheel well, used stainless strips under and over the well (with the plastic in between), and drilled the holes. The stainless gave me the extra sturdiness I wanted. I decided on the wheel well because mounting those vibration feet to the fender seemed near impossible!! But the wires all reach and the MSD Blaster TFI coil couldn't be happier. It took all of about 45 minutes including a coil change.
Power wise, there's a litte more than stock, but I'm sure i'll get more once I regap. Performance wise....... WOW! I can easily take that 300-6 to 3500 and beyond (if ever needed) and i have power all the way! Milage wise.... i'm sure it'd be better, but once I get more power, it seems I can't keep my foot out of it. And with oversized tires, I need all the power I can get out of that 6!
I've got a better place for you to mount your MSD 6AL if you are willing to do two things though. One is obviously mounting it in another spot and two you will have to buy a K&N FIPK kit not the just the K&N filter that fits in the stock air box. The FIPK kit is different unless you have already installed it?! Either way move your MSD system over to the driver's side of the truck and mount it in the metal box/bracket which holds your stock air box. To get the room though you need to install the K&N Filter Injection Performance Kit(FIPK). Cost me $160 from SummitRacing and it will give you some more power. Trust me the stock airbox chokes the hell out ouf our inline 6 engines and the FIPK kit will allow it to breath on the intake. Noticable difference in power and sound. Nice rumble! By doing this your MSD will be protected by sitting in the metal box/bracket that used to hold the stock airbox. Also it will be kept cool from the air flowing over the MSD as it enters the FIPK system. Trust me this is a good this to do. My truck loves me for it!
When I changed out the 300/6 for a 302HO I bought a stand-alone wiring harness from Ford that has all the plugs and enough wire to mount the MSD box on the drivers side wheel well cover. Only 2 wires to hook up, the rest are plugs, and I took the time to run the wires along the firewall and over to the pass. side of the V8 to the coil. The coil on the 6 is on the drivers side, seems like a piece of cake to me.
