I would only replace an I/M with the original Motorcraft,it should have the little shoes to lift the heatsink away from the mounting surface to allow air to cool it.

Purely Ford- Nobody has conducted any "scientific" studies on module failure and nobody ever will. I base my conclusions on many years of experience with both Motorcraft and aftermarket modules. With the price of gas you could not give me an aftermarket DS module to install on a vehicle. Besides, you don't have to spend big bucks on a Motorcraft module. There are many in the scrap yards, just have them tested. So far all the Motorcraft units I have pulled and tested have been good. I am sure I will eventually find a deader... I have seen many dead Motorcraft TFI modules. Putting a Motorcraft DS module in a vehicle with no primary ballast resistor will result in failure, as will installing any aftermarket unit in the same situation.
