Tranny removal

I am ready to drop my tranny from my 75 F250 for some work to be done.
My question is, can I remove the shift lever from the top of the tranny to make it easier to remove?
The tranny is a New Process 435/4spd.

Push down on the ring at the base and turn it counter clockwise then it just pulls out.
