'97 Expy XLT, rear axle code 17, according to all the information floating in cyberspace, this is a 3.31 open diff, right?
I want confirmation because the tech section article doesn't even list my '98 Expy's axle code (H6) and this place http://www.drivetrain.com/noslipfordtruck.html claims that the '97 year axle code 17 IS a LS rear end.
take a look under the truck there will be a metal tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts most likely the upper right side . the first three numbers are the ratio and if there is a number then a "L" followed by the other two numbers it is a limited slip.hope this helps?
That is my first choice, but it's the F-I-L's truck and he's 40 miles away, plus, he's 75 years old and not keen on crawling around under his rear end (!)
I had him look at his door tag and it says 17, anybody...anybody...
I, too, have a '97 Expy. XLT. I have been researching this same info. I checked the axle code & mine is "17" also. I also checked the tags on the diff. cover. The metal tag on the passengers side is stamped: "S 802 C" then under that is "3.31 88 7E23". The metal tag on the drivers side is stamped: "Use 75w140 Synthetic Oil Only".
I have researched this till I'm blue in the face & I am 99.999% sure at this point that mine is NOT a LS rear end. Sounds like your F-I-L's is exactly the same. Hope this helps.
lwong, if your FIL has a manual for the 97 Expy, it should have the axle codes described in there as well. Or wavinwayne, if you have one, you could look it up too.
