just got new motor back in my 74 highboy .its a 429.used flywheel from old motor .it looked like new. installed a mini starter and after starting it hangs up for about 2 seconds b4 releasing.thinking i got a bad starter took it back and got a new one .still doing same thing.any ideas or thoughts? does it need to be shimmed possibly
That what it sounds like. I would call the manufacturer or go to their website and see if they have any info. Or you could buy a stock starter and put on it.
Ok. I went to www.partsamerica.com and plugged in a 1970 country squire station wagon with a 429. The flexplate for this engine is FRA207 which is 154 teeth, 12 pitch, and 14.23 inch diameter. This flexplate has no balance weight.
I then plugged in a 1974 F250 with a 460, and got FRA230 which is the same flexplate only it has a balance weight.
I then plugged in a 1994 F250 with a 460 and one of the choices was again, the FRA230.
So theoretically the flexplate should be the same, except the 429 was an internal balance engine and the 460 was a external balance engine. One interesting thing though was I found they had three different flywheel wheel diameters for a manual tranny. So I hope the starter you have is for a automatic.
What you might have to do is carefully look at the starter when you pull it off, and also carefully look at the flexplate as much as you can, to see if you have any tell-tale marks to make a guess as to what the problem actually is. It could be going in too far, or the teeth could be meshed too tight.
thanks will do .yes i have the starter for an auto.took it out this afternoon and put some small flat washers in there still seems to hang for a second or two will try looking at it tomorrow after work
