So i got an 83 F-150, with a running 6 in it but the carb was messed up, so I swapped in a fresh 400 i had sitting around....
after the motor was put in I had a friend of mine putting on the new plug wires while I wired in a tach and other misc. odds and ends. I took the truck for a ride and it ran decent, but it sounded like the motor was trying harder to spin itself than it was to move the truck, as well as being very hesitant. I took the initiative to go over the plug wires, and I guess my friend didnt realize that the firing order changed from 74-75.
Well i switched a couple wires and fired the motor up and it sounded totally different, and much smoother....I backed up the driveway and didnt realize the power gain and spun posi all for about 30 feet barely tapping the gas, not even meaning it.. Then I pulled out and stomped the gas from a slight roll and spun about 100 feet up the road, smoke bellowing from the 31x10.5's, while instantly seeing a giant yellow flash from my shift light...
never heard of a firing oder change on a 400 or a 351M. There is a firing oder change for the wheezers though. Maybe that is what you are refering to. I think if there was a firing order change within the 335 engine series we would of heard about it before this, especialy with the knowledgable people we have frequinting these boards. torque 1st, bubba250, beyers and many others. Was it a stroked wheezer? I'm pretty sure the I6 and wheezers have the same bellhousing pattern (I'm not sure). both very different than a 429/460 or a 400/351M. So did you change trannies also? godd story anyways.Thanx.
I understand where you are coming from, as well as your counterparts, however i know there was a firing order change, in cars anyway. My motor is a jasper 400. and the firing order change was between 1974 and earlier motors, and 1975 and later motors....i will get the exact #'s for you when i refer to the book...
maybe the firing order is the same but the plug wires go to the distributor in a different order...either way it was wrong before because it was set to the old spec, and now its tuned and timed right......
however, now i am thinking about getting a diff carb, cam, and such, if you guys have any input on that it would be appreciated...
also, i want to switch the rear to a 3/4 ton susp. if anyone has some input.......
There was no firing order change in the 335 series engines. AFAIK there is a firing order change in the 302-351W series to use the cams for the 351W in a 302 and vice-versa etc. There may be more to the 302-351W timing changes. Check with that forum for info.
The firing order for a 335 series is: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Check with the model year forums or the suspension forum for suspension modifications.

when I changed my dizzy from a 77 duraspark to a 72 singlepoint, (now witch houses a pertronix ignitor, instead of points & condenser), I used the same firing order. Even screwed it up the first go around and it ran, but very rough. So how did the dizzy's order change? Wouldn't it necesitate a came change as well? cams determine where the valves are in relation to when the spark fires, and so on.
wel i went and looked it up today, and it seems nothing changed with the firing order, but there were 2 diagrams, 1 for pre 1974, and one for later models, but the firing orders and ect were the same....
since the truck was not running right before, and all i did was wire it according to the second diagram, i just assumed that there was something different...sorry for the confusion, you know what happenes when you assume, it makes an *** out of U and ME.....
but either way the truck ran beautiful after i corrected the problem, and thanks for your input, BTW, i was wondering about putting 3/4 ton susp. in the rear, or getting helper springs or bags, and was wondering what u guys think? (83 F150 4x4)
