Soaking tools overnight in ATF has worked well for me. They wipe clean - blow them out with compressed air where possible and you are good to go.

I'm with the WD 40 guys, although the ATF sounds like a good idea. I never go anywhere without WD in the truck. Would you believe it is also better than power bait on a fishing worm? Fish will hit a worm sprayed with WD when nothing else is biting! ;->
