Trans problem
Hi Guys
Girl friends 95 aero got some trans problems that just popped up.
Does'nt want to shift gear to gear without easing on the trottle then it shifts sloooooow! 1to 2 is worst ,accelerates fine when gear change does happen and seems to stay in gear fine.
Tried vacume mod change and fluid check per the forums advice seems to help a little, what next?
Thanks in advance
James

Hi MrWindow:
Welcome to the forum. It might help if you tell us the mileage of the van. Usually, when a tranny is slow in shifting like that, the first thing I would check is the modulator and the fluid level, but you already checked those. When you check the fluid level, make sure you have shifted through all the gears manually, then check it in Park. Wait a little after you put the fluid in so that the fluid on the tube has a chance to drain back. That way. you'll get a correct reading. Otherwise, the stick will indicate more fluid than you actually have.
Again, welcome and good luck.

Thanks Copper,
I did check it as recomended and will do so again today after sitting for awhile,
The mileage is about 930000 give or take.
I was thinking maybe a solenoid or something stuck in the valve body?
Would old fluid make if do this?
Thanks in advance

Hi MrWindow:
Is the mileage 93 thousand miles or is it 930 thousand miles? If it's only 93K miles, I would say you are probably right about either the valve body or the solenoid. If it's 930K miles, then I would say it's time to rebuild. I do know that when the valves get stuck, the 1-2 shift takes forever. If it's the solenoid, I would expect it not to shift at all.
First thing I would do is to pull the line off the modulator valve and check for vacuum there when the car is idling in Park. Sometimes, the rubber hose goes bad and you lose vacuum to the modulator. If you have changed the modulator, it's most likely the adjustable type. Try turning the adjusting screw a turn or two in each direction and see how it goes.
How does the fluid look? Did you change it? Just draining the pan and changing the filter does not clean out your system, since a lot of the fluid is retained in the Torque Converter. You may have to do the drain-short drive-fill routine 3, 4 times to get all the old fluid out.
Good luck
