well as i got home yesterday afternoon after a nice 60 mile drive from colorado springs, a nice squeak from my engine developed. I had a couple mechanics check it today, one says the alternator, one says the tensioner pulley. its definately coming from the alt/tensioner area, but is there any way to pinpoint which is at fault? one mechanic seemed to place the alternator based on vibration he felt through the casing that seemed to match the squeak. either way, how urgent is this problem(will i make it the 60 miles back to colorado springs)?
On another car that I'm ashamed to say I own"dodge p.o.s." The serpentine belt would make that noise because the tension pully was losing its ,well, tension and I would go through belts once a month. They would shred and one got caught in the harmonic ballancer. You could try taking the belt off and spinning the alt, to see if you feel any drag or hear any noise, its not for sure but you should be able to feel if you have a bad spot on the alt bearing. If you dont feel anything you may have to replace the tension pully.Spin the alt as fast as you can and it may squeek. Just trying to help
awesome, thanks for the info, ill give that a try. is the tensioner pulley terribly hard to replace(as in could i, a person with limited mechanical ability, replace it easily)?
i did what scurbiedog had recommended and everything seemed to "fix" itself. im thinking that there might have just been a nice buildup of dirt/dust/crap that was causing the squeaking when the tensioner pulley was turning. as soon as i got the belt back on and started her back up, no squeak. when i had initially turned the tensioner to pull the belt, an assload of dirt fell out of the front of the pulley, which made me arrive at the "dust/dirt squeak" idea. all is well, thanks for the help scurbiedog =D
