Now, I've only owned 4WD vehicles. The truck in question will NOT be a daily driven vehicle. My buddy and I are purchasing an 87 and 88 F150, both with 300I6's and 4 speeds. The 87 is 2WD, the 88 4WD. Price for both is $400. He doesn't care which one he takes, they both run OK and look pretty good for the year and price. Which do you think I should go with? I have a 99 Chevy 4x4 as my main vehicle, don't see the need for another 4x4, but would like one. Mileage is somewhat of a concern. Just don't know what to do.
It all depends. If you get a 4x4 you could put a big lift and some huge tires on it. That would be cool.
If both cost the same and in the same condtion, Id say the 4x4 is more truck for the money.
Octane
When it comes to the 300 sixes mileage should not really be a concern, Theyll go forever...so if theyre the same price i say get the '88, in the end the 4X4 could always get you out of a sticky situation
Ive never really needed a 4X4. I have a had a few but never needed to lock them in 4WD although I have on occasion done so in the snow but it wasent needed. You will save a few miles per tank full with the 2WD and have lesser possible repair bills but the 4X4 is worth more resale. So if you dont need to be off roading get the 2wd, if theres a chance down the line you might need the 4x4 or decide to sell it come hunting season grab the 4wd.
Actually, the 4wd doesn't run right now. The throttle body for it is on the 2wd. Other than that, everything is good. I don't know if I need another 4x4 though. It's not gonna be used offroad, won't pull much more than my two wheelers on the weekends. The 2wd does need a new drivers door; the window is shattered, and there is alot of rust on it. Otherwise the rest of the truck is great. I just saw them in person today.
This debate is right up there with "which oil is best for my truck?" I have owned both 4wd and 2wd trucks for years, almost all Fords. I have noticed little if any difference in gas mileage between the two and the thing with 4wd drive is you can always turn it off when you don't need it and almost no one does. Life is short, drive what you want to.
Something I learned a long time ago: Four wheel drive ain't worth the extra expense it costs to own/maintain it, that is until you need it! Then it's worth every penny!! If you can think of ANY situation that you may encounter in the truck's future that you might need 4WD, get it. I have the same thoughts concerning winches.
