Roller cam 351 question

When did Ford start putting roller cam 351s in the trucks? I'm getting ready to look for a complete used 351 to replace my tired old 302 in my 92 F150, but I want to get a roller cam-equipped 351, so I need to know when Ford went from flat-tappet to roller in them.

So if I were to get a 94 351 engine I could swap in a stock 302HO Mustang hyd. roller cam and lifters, and stock Mustang Cobra 1.7 rocker arms? That's basically my plan right now.

You will need to add the dog bones and keeper for the roller lifters if you are changing to roller cam. I picked up a set a U-PULLIT auto wrecking off of a 302 2 bucks.

As for 96 being the first year for the roller cammed 351, I'm not so sure about that. I'm about 90% certain my 95 E150 has the roller too. one day I'm going to pull the left valve cover and a pushrod to see for sure. Runs to well after 140.000 miles to be a flat tappet motor.

your gonna have a problem finding a roller cam with an lob seperation of 114* because your 92 has speed density. all the roller cams out there are 112*lobseperation and wont work for ya. you can get a custom cam made though but figure double what a normal cam costs.

UPDATE: I bought that aforementioned 94 351 for $650 today, and it IS a F4TE block. The recycler that I bought it from is delivering it to me tomorrow, and I'll pull the intake to find out FOR SURE that it does indeed have a hyd. roller cam in it already. I also scored some 1 5/8" Mustang shorty headers for it as well, and the shop that's doing the swap for me says they'll build me a Y-pipe to hook up to the headers. Since the truck already has 3" Flowmaster exhaust, Mustang underdrive pulleys, and a custom-built 3.5" intake "power pipe" (I modeled it after the Power Pipes that Anderson Ford Motorsport sells for the Mustangs), this 351 should really run strong.

Comp Cams lists at least 5 different roller cams with a 114 degree LSA. All are listed to work with stock EFI systems. XE264HR, XE270HR, 266HR, 270HR, 276HR ( these last two work with mass-air)

well the 266,270,276 are all lobseperation of 112 and wont run well on speed density.

only the xe264hr would run on a speeddensity equiped rig
Ford 5.0 Xtreme Energy EFI XE264HR Cam or
Ford 5.0 Magnum EFI 266HR Cam or
Ford 5.0 Magnum EFI 270HR Cam.

there are extreme and magnum. most extreme cams have the wrong ls while the magnum cam did have an ls of 114

something else to concider though is were do these cams make there power is it up hi in the rpm range or down low. for a hotrod 1/4 rig hi rpm power is good but for a heavy 4wd that is not desireable

So, are you saying that Comp's catalog is wrong? It clearly list's all as having a 114 degree LSA. And yea, they're intended for mid to upper rpms. If you're looking for a bottom end to mid range cam, then Ford's F4TE roller with 1.7 rockers, is what you want. It's LSA is 116 degrees.

no what im saying is you werent specific on which model cam had the correct lob seperation from the catalog. there are different versions of each you listed both having either a 112* or 114* I went on the site and looked. either way those cams cost as much as a custom cam would cost to be made with the right power range and correct lobeseperation for your application.
