what transmission?
i have a 2000 f250 4x4 with 7.3 auto trans. do i have a 4r100 or a e4od transmission? what trans fluid do i use? on the dipstick it says to use mercon fluid but auto parts store tell me to use mercon v. in the owners manual it says not to mix these two fluids, they are not compatible.

Missouguy, next time the Ford techs tell you not to use the synthetic, you might let them know that all of the oil fluids that Ford has are synthetic. They might even try to argue with you about this, LOL; they will see on the bottles Ford puts the stuff in though.

You can use any fluid, synthetic or not, as long as it has the correct rating. For the 4R100 that's MERCON. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It has a MERCON, but not MERCON V rating, and is exactly what my 4R100 needs.
