There was a member on another board that wanted to know which vacuum modulator to install in his C6 Bronco. Green strip, purple or black. One member chimed in and said that the black ones are specifically for pickup trucks and Bronco's and that is the only one to be used for his application. I replied saying that I have a Bronco 351W C6 as well, and that I just had my modulator replaced at a tranny shop and a green stiped modulator was installed. Worked like a charm. So we are at an impasse, and cant agree as to which is which.
His understanding that ONLY black striped modulators are used on F150/Bronco's. My understanding is that the type of modulator used depends on the application, as well as the size of the engine. My reasoning is that since C6's operate on vacuum, and that different engines produce different amounts of vacuums, then different modulators are used ( a theory promoted by the fact that there are 3 different types of modulators for this specific tranny) When I had mine taken in they removed the old modulator (couldnt tell what strip it was; lots of grime) and weighed it so the correct replacement could be installed.
Any insight from members well educated in the C6 to enlighten this disagreement?
1/ white or green stripe- screw in,single diaphragm - 1966-72E.
2/ purple stripe - push in - single diaphragm, L72 on.
3/ green stripe - push in single diaphragm, 1977 on.
4/ blue stripe - dual diaphragm (351-4bbl,& 400) 73-74
5/ pink stripe - dual diaphragm, 73-74
6/ pink stripe - dual diaphragm 75-76
He is wrong, you are right. I don't know Jack about the C6, I have a 5 speed, but anyone who says their way is the only way is automatically wrong and needs to learn to be flexable.
I just replaced mine a few weeks ago and it calls for a purple band one. Had to buy both the purple and the green because I could not tell which one to use until I pulled the old one off and cleaned the grime off.
