EGR Valve (Inefficient Flow)

Engine light just came on for the first time ever on my truck so natually I got a little worried. Got a 99 DRW V10 with 99K miles on it. Been an outstanding truck. I took it to Advance Auto and the computer showed an inefficient flow code from the EGR Valve. Looks easy to replace but I'm wondering if I can take it out and clean it. Probably some carbon build up. I had a problem starting a couple months back and someone off this board mentioned I should check my IAC valve and I did (cleaned it up with car cleaner) and truck started up no problem ever again. EGR valve was about 75 bucks but if I could clean it up and put back in that would be nice. Anyone know? By the way my truck is running fine with no issues despite the code and engine light.

The problem isn't normally the EGR valve. The DPFE sensor is usually the culprit. The DPFE controls the EGR valve.

I'm voting for a DPFE as well. BTW, when replacing that DPFE make sure both of the hoses going to it are free-flowing. If you've got a piece of carbon in the exhaust-side hose, it'll send the wrong information to the computer.

The dpfe sensor is located just to the back right of the egr valve,a black box with 2 vacum hoses to it with a elect connector plug in it. has 2 small bolts holding it to a bracket.

Just replace the hoses to and from. They're cheap and eliminates any doubt as if ther're cracked, clogged or leaking.

Talking Hoses

If you do replace the hoses, you will have to get them from the Ford dealer along with the DPFE sensor. They are special multi layer heat resistive hoses.

I finally got around to replacing thje DPFE sensor this weekend. Took only 10 minutes. My check engine light is still on after I started with the new sensor on. Do I need to have the code cleared or will it go away by itself? Assuming the DPFE was the problem.

It will eventually clear itself. I think it takes about 30 cycles to self clear. If you unplug the ECM fuse for a couple of minutes the code should clear. Disconnect the battery cable will do the same thing. If the code returns you still have a problem, but I doubt that will happen.

Unhooked my battery for an hour or so and no more code. Awesome. I know it's a dummy code and my truck would probably have been fine with the old sensor and the engine light on but I feel better about it. Thanks all for your advise about the DPSE sensor.
