Model # decipher

Hi Guys
What does each letter/number signify in the "vin" tag of late '40's early '50's
Example 98RTH 24880
"9" is the year ('49)
"8"????
"R" Engine size (239 cid)
"T???
"H"????

Is there anything in the "code" to signify which tranny model is in the truck?

98RTH 24880 -
9 was used for '49/'50'/early '51
8R was designation for V8 (7H was for 6 cyl)
TH was for size of truck - in this case 2 ton, F6

gvw 15,500 and wheelbase of 134"

No code for the tranny, but isn't hard to figure what you have. If it is stock it is either the spur gear'd 4 spd or the silent synchro'd 4 spd.

According to the manual, the syncro-silent was standard equipment Only in the F-6 with "M" six cylinder. Ain't seen a six banger yet in a boneyard, But lots of F-5's and up with 8's.
If someone bought the opiton tranny, how can I tell? Can't really try it.

Can you pop the top cover? See if it has helical gears and brass synchros. If its the crashbox version the gears will be straight cut.

The synchro units have "4TH" cast into the side of the case. If it's "4TA or 4TB", it's a crash box. Make sure you grab all the linkage, bellhousing, etc.. as it's different from the non synchro.
