Hi Guys
What does each letter/number signify in the "vin" tag of late '40's early '50's
Example 98RTH 24880
"9" is the year ('49)
"8"????
"R" Engine size (239 cid)
"T???
"H"????
Is there anything in the "code" to signify which tranny model is in the truck?

According to the manual, the syncro-silent was standard equipment Only in the F-6 with "M" six cylinder. Ain't seen a six banger yet in a boneyard, But lots of F-5's and up with 8's.
If someone bought the opiton tranny, how can I tell? Can't really try it.

The synchro units have "4TH" cast into the side of the case. If it's "4TA or 4TB", it's a crash box. Make sure you grab all the linkage, bellhousing, etc.. as it's different from the non synchro.
