my 86 F350 6.9 is consuming oil like crazy and smokes like an old train the smoke is blue it doesn't have any leaks till now the truck heads has been repair before that's what the previous owner told my the truck start very good as soon the plug lights go off I was thinking of an over haul but a guy told me that couldn't be the rings since compression rate is to much that the truck wound even start and now oil is leaking bad from the exhaust pipe in the flanges just before the muffler what could it be any thoughts on this matter thanks
Could be the oil rings, it could be valve guide seals. If it is turbo charged it could be turbo seals. If you idle the engine for periods of time it could be fuel mixing with exhaust soot you are seeing on the exhaust. Might be time for rebuilding the heads or the entire engine. How many miles you have on it? Have you done any work on it since you own it?
The 6.9s are very talented in the fact that they can have plenty of compression to run but still be worn out enough to burn oil like crazy. I think it is due to the oil cooled pistons. Each cylinder has a small steel pipe aimed up under the piston to "cool" them some from the outrageous compression ratio they have. All that oil is just shoving it's way by the rings without loosing much pressure. I've pulled apart hi-mile 6.9s that still ran with broken rings on most of the pistons.
