severe backfiring
My 86 F150 backfires quite a lot. It's got 166000 miles, and there seems to be a part missing near the carb, most likely an emmissions part. Sometimes when it backfires, it nearly takes the muffler off. Then the engine will run rough. I've changed the distributor cap and wires but it had no effect. I was told to change the electronic ignition but I don't want to spend money I don't have to. There is no vacauum advance that I can see, and there is no centrivical advance under the rotor, but being electronic, maybe it does not need one.

check the timming, also you could have a burned valve, your carb may be one that sends info back to the computer,(feedback) you say your missing soem things of of it, that may be the cause, as well, switch to an older non feedback carb
