I've got an Offenhauser 4bbl intake on my truck, topped off by a Holley 390 cfm carb, a Heddman Hedder, a TFI-IV ignition, and a Compression ratio of 10.25:1, and I average 31 mpg, mostly highway, thats without O/D, my rearend is too high to handle a SROD, I can't afford a T-5, and I don't have a hydraulic clutch.......

31mpg???? That's a typo right? If not, I think popular mechanics should do an article on this! There are engineers all over the world trying to squeeze 28mpg out of v6's!
Evan , Thats got to be a typo , correct ? 31 mpg ? Since fuel is sold at a per liter price in NS , you have to calculate your mileage in Liters per 100 Km then convert it to Mpg .
You guys are lucky, my truck is an 86 its gets about 10 mpg maybe 11 if i keep a light foot, it runs great has oomph but it runs sooo rich that i would not smoke a cigarette near the exhaust pipe while its running, im considering rplaceing the carb and goin with a dual exhaust system, by the way 2 questions...
1. i much rather run a split manifold than headers that willl eventually rust out, so guys would a later model split manifold bolt up ok in conjunction with my 1 bbl intake manifold?
2. Evan, a tfi-IV ignition runs in counjuction with feed back modules on the carb , a holley 390 does not provide these modules, i want to put a 4bbl manifold and 4bbl carb on mine too, edelbrock, by the way. does you motor run ok running the tfi-IV without the feed back modules?
31 mpg huh? do you have a magic 300 youve got a 390 cfm 4bbl that would probally give you hlf of 31, a fuel injected 300 such as my pop's only gets 15 to 20 and that truck's system is in perfect running order.
LAST EDITED ON 11-Sep-00 AT 07:49 PM (EST)[p]D'oh, that's on a Canadian gallon(4.54 liters, American gallon is 3.78)so I'm getting 26.6 miles to a U.S. gallon. My TFI-IV computer has only 6 or 7 wires going into it, I eliminated every connection to the computer on it that wasn't tied into the distributer other than it's power and ground, and it works perfect, half a turn of the starter and it fires right up. Well, only half of the 390 is working, I have the vac. secondaries disonnected, and I have a very light right foot(odd for a 16 year old eh?,) my mileage may also have something to do with the truck turning at 1950 rpm at 60 mph, I think the closer the engine is to it's torque peak the less fuel it uses(engine doesn't get bogged down etc.,) but I have no evidence to prove my theory.

Evan I'm actually betting that you are more likely getting 31Km/gal, which would put you right about at 19 Miles/gal like almost everyone else who has a properly tuned 4.9L I6.
(being that there are 1.6 Kilometers in a mile 31KM/1.6KM per mile =19.375Miles)
I don't know much about this Canadian Gallon thing, I thought the pumps up there dispensed gas by the liter?
Well, I know it ain't KM/gal, I have standard guages out of a F600(mph speedo, tach, better calibrated guages etc...), and I have the speedometer calibrated so that the odometer registers 1 mile in a measured mile(Checked it in Mass.) What may be making my truck easier on fuel is the higher CR that I have(10.25:1 as opposed to 8.4:1.) I just brought the truck through customs, and before I could bring it through customs as a non-salvage vehicle(keep the title clean...), I had to get it registered and inspected in Mass(it had not been for two years)., and it passed emissions testing with flying colours(very low Hydrocarbons for a 300), without an air pump, cat as a LD 300 with emissions systems, my HD never had any.
Yes, gas is sold by the litre here, the Canadian(imperial) gallon is 4.54 litres(roughly 1.2 gallons), where as the U.S gallon is 3.78 liters

my 85 F-150 300 I6 just got 20.5 mg of in town driving, but there are a couple of things to consider. the motor and C-4 tranny both have less than 8,000 miles on them. they were both replaced this last Febuary. the motor is brand new(not rebuilt) and the tranny had a complete and total overhaul done. the truck has no cat, no muffler(i now have one sitting in the passenger seat!), MSD Blaster TFI coil, K&N airfilter, smog pump belt is disconnected, and it has 2.47 FDR.
Changed the air filter and serpentine belt on my recently acquired 89 F150 4.9L I6 which was previously getting about 10mpg ....filled up the rear tank, drove 55 miles, re-filled up the rear tank.....2.18 gallons. That's about 25 Miles per gallon. Have to do a little more measured driving and see what I get around town, but that needle doesn't move much anymore.
M5OD, Light right foot, 92 octane, cheapo 235-75-R15s . Not sure what rear-end I have at the moment but I know both rear wheels spin on wet pavement and around corners.
The best I can squeeze is 14-15MPG. 96F150, ext cab, 4x4, 5spd,300/6, 3.55, tall fiberglass top, bed liner, 31x10.5 AT tires. I picked up a 93 Escort wagon to drive about 100 miles daily to work. It gets 38MPG all the time. 100 miles every 1/4 tank.
When I drive the F150 the guage drops like a hole in the tank...

I new the 300/6 was used in the F250 but I didn't know they stuck the Mazda trans in there too. Always thought they used the heavy duty four speed or the awsome ZF5spd.
