today my poweer steering started making a humming noise when it is turned either left or right i toped up the fluid and it still makes the same noise i have a 93 f150 5.0 efi
I've got an 88 F350 that does the same thing. It had a bad pump when I bought it. I replaced it and it only makes noise when turning - like yours. What did yours sound like before? I've heard a lot of other ford trucks around town with pumps that make quite a bit of noise. If anyone has replaced theirs or has one that is "quiet", please let me know - I'm not too happy about a new pump that still makes noise.
no i could not even hear it before, i was showin my girlfried how to park the truck, in a empty parking lot then i was bein a jackass and tromped on it and turned a little then after that it started humming
When ford went to the "New, Improved" plastic pump in the mid late 70's, all HE$% broke loose. The new pump was noisier, had a nasty habit of leaving you stranded at the most inconvenient times and cost 4-5 times higher than the old metal saginaw style pump. At one point in the early 80's you could tell a FORD Product was coming down the street or around the corner just from the Pump whine.
The easiest thing I've found to do is to flush the P.S. system out with ATF, (use at least 10 qts and waste it all), then drain completely. Fill with Power steering fluid and one can of Lucas Power Steering Conditioner.
Or you can find a Saginaw pump out of a GM product and retrofit it.
95 f150 XLT: changing a ps pump isn't really that hard at all. It is actually as easy at it looks. My buddy and i changed a pump an his 94 and is went real smooth.
Payner22: I think the noise isn't really much to worry about as long as it isn't really super loud or anything, mine as well as all fords make a little noise. BTW if you notice a difference in steering control, ie. not smooth, or kinda jittery/grindy when you turn the wheel then maybe something else is the problem. After all if you romped on it with the wheels turned and something like a curb or parking spot concerete slab was holding the tire back, you may have damaged something else, not the actual pump. Just a thought...
I have a 95 f-150 and my pump never really made noise when I first got it. And then I noticed one day it was a little hard to turn and was makin more noise and I could feel the vibration of the pump comin back up thru the steering wheel. Put some more fluid in it and it came out of it a little. Come to find out theres just a seal thats worn out and is leaking. No biggy, as long as is still turns I'm happy I dont care bout the noise. The pump on my ranger is louder than the 4 banger itself lol.
Also my buddy had the old metal style pumps from an early 70's truck and was somehow able to put it on a 93 style 351. Not sure how much cuttin and weldin was involved but knowin him, probably a lot.
