Just bought a 98 F150 XLT long box, extenda cab. Changed rear UJ to certify and balanced all 4 wheels. Has a vibration at 50 kph (30mph), mostly in the steering. Goes away at 70 kph. On the highway at 100 kph, no problem, smooth as silk. Has a two piece driveshaft. Mechanic says hanger okay. Is there a problem with the two piece? Can it be swapped out for a single? Realize here it is a long chassis. Do you think rotating the tires would help? Any ideas fellows?
Because you can feel the vibration mainly in the steering that points to a problem in the front end. If the vibration is low frequency, like a shimmy, I would start by swapping the front tires to the rear and then see if you feel it less in the steering and more in the seat. If so then you probably have a tire or rim problem.
And if not, then start inspecting the steering linkage and other front end components closely. In fact do that anyway. If swapping front for rear clears it, it still could be loose linkage that amplifies an imbalanced wheel.
WHat kind of tires do you have on it? I run the BFG all terrains and if you dont rotate regularly, then you can get what is called "cupping" and get a slight vibration. If you have tires with large lugs on them, take a look and see if it seems they are worn in an angle front to back.
Thanks guys. I figured tires, but it's always good to get a second, third, even fourth opinion. I will try the rotation as soon as we get back to civilization. Currently we live in Bogota, Colombia, so I will be on it as soon as we hit the ground in July back in Canada.
