Just bought a 96 PSD CC 4wd today and have about $1000 to play with.. Im thinking chip/down pipe/gauges.. what do you guys think?? Which chip?? Looking for a switchable one so i can be stock or hopefully get a few more MPG.. THanks..
sounds about right for that money. dont leave the gauges out whatever you do. i think if you shop wisely you will have money left over for other stuff.
Gauges first, then dp and 4" exhuast. Tymar intake. And in my opinion a 4 bank chip from TS or from a custom burner. Then if ya want to go from their.........Bigger injectors, and proably a intercooler to bring the egt's down. By then, your upgrading the tranny/clutch.. Its endless!..
so you would go w/ the exhause before a chip?? I understand the reasoning behind the gauges, but why the exhaust first?? The intake was a given by the way, it was going to be done.. It already has a K&N, so i'll work for now,..
No its not a must........ you can go without it, and see where your egt's run. If you tow alot or get high egt's running your chip you'll have to at least gut the cat and put in a downpipe. Once you get the exhaust and hear how good it sounds you'll wonder why ya did'nt do it sooner.
With a chip or tuner, your EGT's will be hitting the high end of the limits. With my Predator tuner and K&N FIPK intake, it was easy to hit 1250*+ within seconds of WOT. After putting in a 4" DP and exhaust, it was only getting to about 1150*. So, if you get chipped before the exhaust, you'll not enjoy your new power (unless you are not worried about over heating your Turbo) and end up getting off the throttle sooner. This is just my opinion though, you can do what I did and get the chip/tuner first.
Not always. Every truck is different. And 65 hp in all reality is about all the hp increase you can possibly see with a OBS psd with stock injectors. So with about any chip your maxing out you injectors.
Too add to that.. When I towed before getting the 4" exhaust/ and no chip at all I was hitting 1300 deg pulling over mountian passes. So that to me shows how important gauges are.
Depends. There are many variables in determining EGTs. Certain chips and tuners will run hotter than others. If you tow or drive hard they can get up there in a hurry. Personally I think gauges and intake/exhaust should be done before any performance type mods (i.e. chip/tuner) Need to have the foundation done before you do anything else to get the full potential out of your mods.
I agree with mjwhip2, lay the foundation, then it makes it easier to play.
I would think you should have enough money for all of it. Figure $300-$400 for a ~75hp chip at the most for OBS, you can get a good aluminized exhaust, full 4" (you won't be able to fit a 4" dp though) for $300(that's what mine cost me), $300 for gauges, you already have the intake, as long as it's not a panel filter in the stock box. Those are rough estimates, real close to what I paid for my mods. If you do enough shopping I'm sure you can get everything for $1000 or less.
Good luck!
ch93... man i feel your pain...!
it is soooooo tempting to just get a predator programer and pump up the power on your mule so you can play...!
one problem... i need this girl to laaasssstttt...! so... gauges first, then intake/exhaust... then the PREDATOR...!
