It could be considered a "gas" pedal on gasoline powered fuel injected engines too. (A gas & air pedal more accurately) The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is attached to the butterfly valve. Doesn't the TPS (in conjunction with the MAF and O2 sensors) tell the PCM at what load the engine is operating and what amount of gas should be injected? (Pulse width and frequency...) Yes, so it can be a "gas" pedal on an EFI engine as well.
The pedal is connected to a cable that opens and closes a butterfly or in the case of the drive by wire (dad has it on his 05, I HATE it) a servo motor opens and closes the butterfly to allow more AIR in.
... and more fuel since the butterfly valve is linked to the TPS... If you actuate the butterfly valve, you automatically actuate the TPS. Lets apply the transitive property here:
IF
pushing gas pedal = opening butterfly valve
AND
opening butterfly valve = operates TPS
THEN
pushing gas pedal = operates TPS
And the TPS is of course one of the component that controls fuel delivery.
O my goodness!!
This is about the stupidest thread I've ever seen :-)
And that comment shouldn't be taken lightly, coming from a Chevrolet owner and all! That is an inane thread! (But come on, everyone loves to watch a train wreck.)
LOL Tim. I don't see why you can't call it a gas pedal in a gasser car/truck/SUV. Heck the further down you push that pedal, the more gas the engine recieves and therefore the worse your mpg gets, so why the heck not call it a gas pedal? By the way maybe I can lock this thread by mentioning that I think the thread starter is Bi-Polar.
LOL ....Gray spot...Tim your funny lol. The electronic throttle control on the new F-150's takes a lot more skill to drive smoothly with, but it's not hard to acquire. The only really noticeable difference, is the response time when you put it to the floor, it takes at least half a sec longer than a cable controlled throttle. This isnt factoring in the automatic either.
The "throttle pedal" can't be called either a "gas pedal" or an "air pedal" for exactly the same reasons. BVFD1983 says it should be called an "air pedal" because it lets more air in. The rest of the normal world calls it a "gas pedal" because it causes more gas to be let into the engine (whether injected, squirted or sucked in). Neither one can be accurate, because the net effect of opening the throttle is to let BOTH more air and more fuel into the engine. To call it one or the other is incorrect because it only reflects part of the overall function of the pedal.
So BVFD1983, if you complain because it's called a gas pedal then you should also complain if it's called an air pedal.
If you want to split hairs why not just call it an "intake restriction valve operating pedal"?
