Just getting the heads ready to take to the engineering shop and I noticed that they have different casting numbers. One has CF(Cleveland foundry) D5AE A3A (underside) on the intake runners and 5J12 on top. The other has MCC(Michigan) D5AE A2A (all on the top of head) 5J9 also on top. Both heads have 1975 3 cast in a circle. Is this a date code? Are they different CC heads? OR Am I able to use these heads on the same engine? Or should I start looking for another set of heads?? Would ford have used different casting heads for the same engine? Perhaps they run out of CF heads on that day, as all other parts are from CF foundry, block, inlet manifold, water pump….etc
There's no such thing as a 1975 Cleveland head so he definitely has 2 351M/400 heads not that it makes that much difference.
The only real difference between the 2 heads is where they were cast. Both were cast in Sept 1975, the CF on the 12th and the MCC on the 9th. There's a slight revision as noted by the A2A vs A3A but I seriously doubt it's that big of a deal. I'd have no problem using them on the same engine after they're rebuilt.
Thats great news thanks. i can take them to the machine shop later in the week. so i can get my new stainless valves in (at last). it seems to be taking forever to get the car back on the road.
